Eric and I celebrated our 4-year wedding anniversary last Thursday, February 5th. My parents graciously agreed to watch the kiddos and also gave us a gift certificate to Jun, our fave sushi place in Springs. Considering our new rural lifestyle (living half an hour from the nearest eating establishment) and general lack of funds, it’s a rare occurrence to enjoy a sit-down restaurant, let alone a sushi restaurant. We had a blast and ate some delicious raw fish as well as some juicy calamari tempura. We failed to take any pics in Jun (I think we were a little too excited about eating to stop and pull out the camera) but we did take a few in Pikes Perk, a great local coffee shop chain that is Christian-owned. While at the coffee shop we decided to compile another list of ten things we’d like to accomplish in this year of marriage. We made a list on our one-year anniversary and it took us two years to complete eight out of ten items…we have yet to visit the Grand Canyon or make a quilt together…so hopefully we’ll be a little more determined and motivated this time around. A few of the items on our list…

We continued our anniversary celebration on Saturday by visiting the Denver Zoo with the kids. It’s a great zoo where the animals can be viewed closely, and getting around doesn’t require maximum lung efficiency as does the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in CO Springs, with its being built into the side of a mountain! Eric got to see his favorite zoo animal of all time, the red panda, and took some fun pictures. The weather was nice and Calla and Hudson were both very well-behaved, which made the experience even more pleasant. We’re even thinking about returning next Saturday for their free admission day. Anyone care to join us?

Our now 8-week-old Hudson is doing well and growing like a weed. I took him to our midwife for a checkup a few days ago and he exceeded the weight limit on her 12 lb scale. Since another midwife had taken the larger scale with her to a home visit, we weren’t able to get an accurate weight but estimated him at close to 13 lbs. That’s somewhere around the 75th percentile for weight. He measured 24 inches long, which is also 75th percentile for length. Calla has consistently been at the 25th percentile for weight and the 75th for height…tall and thin. It has been a change having a child that fills out his clothes!
Hudson has come close to sleeping through the night a few times but he’s not quite there yet. Hopefully soon! Calla has been waking up more in the night than Hudson has, which has been sort of a challenge for us. One night last week we woke up to the bedroom lights on and Calla playing quietly next to our bed. Fortunately she responds quickly to Baba’s command to go back to her bed!
The new relationship of ’siblings’ has also been a challenge. Although Calla can be a great help…fetching clean diapers, throwing away dirty ones, etc…she can get a little too involved at times, to the dismay of her little brother. Her affection can be overly aggressive (big surprise to anyone who knows her fiery personality) and many naps have been interrupted in the name of “just helping him!” But there are also times when their interactions are so sweet I can hardly stand it. Lately Calla has been able to make Hudson smile and even laugh a few times. I look forward to when they can really play together and enjoy one another’s company.
